The use of time-outs and consequences as discipline measures has mushroomed in recent years.  Unfortunately time-outs, at least in the way they are typically practiced, tend to be harmful to a parent's relationship with their child and to the child's emotional functioning. Once assumed to be safe practice and still recommended by over 80% of today’s pediatricians, we must now become conscious of the risks involved.

Consequences, while quite effective in some circumstances, have a very narrow range of effectiveness that is seldom appreciated. If consequences fail to work, they can make matters worse. 

In this special two-hour talk, Dr. Neufeld will elucidate the trouble with time-outs and the indiscriminate use of consequences as well as outlining twelve guidelines for discipline that is attachment-safe and developmentally friendly.
